SCAM ALERT!
We have been notified that there are people out
there claiming to be with "PetFinders" and that they are affiliated
with WichitaPetFinder. They claim to be out of California. They are
offering to do a "phone sweep" of your neighborhood in hopes to locate your LOST PET.
They either want wired money or your credit card, charging so much per
block.
This is a SCAM! WichitaPetFinder.com does not charge any money
whatsoever for lost pet listings, nor do we phone solicit for lost pet
services associated with fees. Should you get a call like this,
contact the police immediately.
And remember, be careful when you are offering a reward associated with a
lost pet. If someone calls
and says they have your pet, meet them in a public place and do not go
alone! Also be sure and leave out some identifying mark or trait in
your lost pet listing so that you can better determine if someone really has
your pet.
1.Start searching immediately! Pets have been known to stay in the
area they disappeared for 12-24 hours. Be sure and search your
home high and low. Check every place a pet may get stuck as well.
Inside and outside around your home. Remember your
safety should
always come first!
2. Place an ad immediately under lost pets
and include a photo if at all possible. Be sure and place ads with
all local newspapers. Call KFDI Pet Patrol at 838-9141.
3.Place flyers all over the area your pet
was lost. The more the better. Get your neighborhood
involved. A reward is also helpful, but it is wise not to disclose
the reward amount. Be sure and post flyers in area grocery stores,
vet clinics,
convenient stores, community centers, pet stores and groomers.
Give a copy to your mail carrier, newspaper delivery person and sanitary
workers. Remember, they drive the neighborhood every day. Be sure
and notify Vets in the area. Often, people will take an injured
animal to the nearest Vet Clinic.
4.Go to
local animal shelters immediately. Most only hold pets for
three days before they are either adopted out or euthanized. Bring
a picture of your pet with you to give to shelter employees. Be
sure and check back every day to see if your pet has been brought in.
A phone call is not enough! There is no one better than you to
identify your pet.
5. Leave something outside of your home
that your pet will recognize the scent of. Such as a toy, or their
bedding as well as a litter box.
6. Search the neighborhood when it's
quiet as well. Walk slowly and call for your pet and listen for a
response. Take a box of food or treats and shake it as you call
for them. If they have a squeaky toy, bring that as well.
Don't forget to look in trees for cats. Often they climb too high
and may fear coming down.
7. Call
Animal Control to see if your pet has been picked up. Be sure
and call every day!
8. Beware of reward scams. If
anyone calls and says they are a truck driver and picked up your pet and
are now in another city or state and wants you to send them money to
ship your pet home, don't buy it! This is a very common scam.
Also be sure and leave a couple identifying features of your pet out of
your lost listing and flyers. If the person calling you cannot
describe these features, they most likely do not have your pet.
9. If someone claims to have your pet,
please take someone with you to pick it up. This is just an extra
precaution. Play it safe!
10. Don't give up! Pets can be gone
for months before reunited with their owners. Continue to run your
lost listings for as long as possible - at least 60-90 days.
We wish you the very best in finding your lost pet. Once you have
found your pet, please email us your success story.
